The Council of the Wise

He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.
Proverbs 13:20

One of my dear friends and I often have to arrange our schedules for some girl time because of our ministry schedules but when we do get together we have the most wonderful time. We have to play catch-up on all the things we have done since we last sat down and talked. She is a PK (preacher’s kid) and got the wonderful opportunity to hear words of wisdom from her mom concerning life. I am always delighted to hear these nuggets of wisdom that her mom empowered her with because they are humorous but true. My friend, as well as all of my other friends minister the wisdom of God to anyone who need direction in their lives. This is their life and their ministry.

I am blessed to have friends and associates who love the Lord and seek His counsel. One thing is evident in our conversations and that one thing is, wisdom begets wisdom or iron sharpens iron. When I was in my twenties, God placed three wise women in my life to guide me. Of course, I had friends my own age but when life got difficult, I went to the older women for guidance. They helped me maneuver through the hard places with their wisdom.

I didn’t start this race as a wise woman; I became wise from my associates, the Word of God and my relationship with Him. I grew wise through my affiliation with older wise women who loved the Lord and His Word. We grow wise when we hang with wise people. The older women would pull me aside and tell me that I needed to spend more time with God and prayer and less time with foolish talking. I listened to these women of wisdom and God blessed me with knowledge beyond my years. I walk with a company of wise men and women who enrich my life and inturn, I know that my life is to impart what I have learned into younger men and women.

The flip side of wisdom is foolishness. Those who choose to hang with a company of fools will suffer possible harm, failure and difficult consequences for their actions. That harm may be to spend too much money just because we “want” something without considering our financial situation or to hang out in places that are not good or safe for us which can lead to brawls and ungodly relationships. We will do foolish things that will cost us job loss, financial loss, bad health, addictions, failed marriages and even incarceration. We will throw off restraints because fools don’t consider consequences for their foolish actions.

Seek wisdom; you cannot live a prosperous life without it. Pray and ask God to bring wise people into your life so that you will live a peaceful good life and grow wise.
